What Is A Little Free Library? My Wee Library Charter 31891!

The concept is simple, in that it is basically a book sharing nook. 

Take a book, share a book.


 It’s a great way to refresh your books without having to spend money, and without having to worry about late fees! There are over 100,000 sharing boxes worldwide, and about three dozen registered in the city of Edmonton, here in Alberta, Canada.

2023 marks eight years in the well established Avonmore Community,


with a diverse population from retirees to young families. Primarily posting children's books, surprises often turn up with novels, cookbooks and Canadian authors. Located on a busy residential street backed by tall spruce trees,  the wee library sports sports a bench, a chair and even the occasional library cat! that bid readers to stop and pull open drawers.

labelled as to different genre of books but primarily focussed on those for children, from preschoolers to youth readers. Also some French books, adult fiction and non fiction including travel and cookbooks.

Cookbooks specIals: I know what you do when unknown recipe! Hit the internet and see the reviews! Right? Well how long has it been since you sat down with Company's Coming or other cookbooks to find one or showed your child or grandchild how to read a cookbook or make measurements? 

 

Do you have a preschooler who loves Fairies?


One of the recent donations to which I did abit of a repair and once no worry of rain will set out with the others.

Visitors: This spring chatted with two pre-teens from Avonmore school who were heading down to the ravine but stopped at the library, admired Prince, the library cat 


and stashed a large bag of selections including puzzles under the table to await their return. Said they have been stopping for a few years. Oh think of the joy of adventures!

Why am I back to blogging?

Originally about 2004 or 2005 I started a blog on my work stints in N unavut http://bonnieupnorth.xanga.com/ which lasted until 2015 when Xanga no longer supported the site. My Nunavut Blog  A brief stop 2010-20 for a creative writing blog but no longer supported by typepad. Then as we all know social media and the internet has changed so much and spend far too much time there. Reasons for doing so now include the fact wanting to take some time to do some writing, sharing my experiences and photos and perhaps finding another creative writing group.

Book banning in Alberta and my Perspective as an owner of a Little Free Library

It is discouraging to observe that the book banning trend in the United States has extended to Canada. Alberta is the sole province in Canada that has implemented such drastic measures. In July 2025, Alberta issued a ministerial order mandating the removal of sexually explicit materials from public school libraries by October 1st.   Recently the Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB) has created a list of books being removed from all school libraries accessible to students in K-12. including many classic authors.
